NAKED TAN: 20 Tan Tips

20 TAN TIPS
3 Step Tanning Routine

Every girl wants gorgeous glowing skin and a sun kissed glow, am I right ladies? ...But we don't want nasty sunburn! Following a fake tanning routine will ensure a flawless natural looking tan all year round.

To achieve a flawless faux tan I love using the range of Naked Tan professional at home tanning products.

In this How To video I explain my 3 step, 3 day Naked Tan tanning routine and share 20 tan tips to help you achieve a flawless tan. So if you want gorgeous glowing Goddess like skin follow these 3 easy steps to achieving the perfect tan.

Day 1  PEPARE
  • Exfoliate your skin using a body scrub - I love Naked Tan's Goddess Body Exfoliator
  • Cleanse skin with a body wash - I use Naked Tan Goddess Body Cleanser

Goddess Body Exfoliator

DAY 2 TAN
  • Take a cool shower and wash your body with Naked Tan's Goddess Body Cleanser.
  • After showering do not apply deodorant
  • Apply Naked Tan Créme de la Créme to any dry areas of your body like elbows, hands, wrists, etc.
  • Shake your Naked Tan Bronzing Mousse bottle and then apply 1 pump to a tanning application mitt or Makeup Brush.
  • Apply the product directly to your skin (with brush or mitt) using swirling motions to blend the product into the skin.
  • Repeat this process until your body is tanned.
  • Dry your body with your hair dryer on cool setting

DAY 3 MAINTAIN
  • Maintain your tan daily with a body butter like Goddess Crème de la Crème
  • Maintain your tan for longer - avoid using soap in the shower - use a body wash like Goddess Body Cleanser
  • Add an extra glow and enhance your tan with a Bronzing Creme or liquid bronzer - I use Goddess Instant Tan.

TANNING TIPS

1 EXFOLIATE SKIN WITH BODY SCRUB
On the day or days leading up to your tan day - exfoliate your skin with a body scrub (Goddess Body Exfoliator)

2 CLEANSE SKIN WITH BODY WASH
Clean skin in the shower/bath before tanning application with a body wash or shower gel

3 CLEAN SKIN IN A COOL SHOWER - AVOID HOT SHOWERS
Have a cool shower on tanning day! Long hot shower can open your pores - you don't want that.

4 APPLY A BRONZING MOUSSE
Using a self tanning mousse like Naked Tan's Goddess Bronzing Mousse will result in a streak free professional tan. It's easy to apply at home!

5 SHAKE BOTTLE BEFORE APPLYING BRONZING MOUSSE
Be sure to shake the bottle before application to ensure an even tan application.

6 APPLY MOUSSE WITH A BRUSH OR TANNING APPLICATION MITT
To achieve a streak free tan apply your Bronzing Mousse with a large powder makeup brush or Goddess Tanning Mitt.

Naked Tan Goddess Application Mitt

7 AVOID WEARING DEODORANT ON TANNING DAY
After showering be sure to not apply any deodorant.
If you apply deodorant and then apply bronzing mousse over the area where your deodorant was applied the bronzing mousse will turn green - disaster!

8 APPLY BODY BUTTER TO DRY SKIN FIRST
Be sure to apply moisturiser or a body butter to dry areas like elbows, wrists and ankles before applying your tanning mousse. (Tan grab to dry areas and cause a dark patchy tan - hydrating these dry spots before tanning will help prevent this.)

9 AFTER TAN DRY SKIN WITH A HAIRDRYER
After applying your fake tan - dry your skin using your hair dryer on a cool setting. This will ensure your tan is completely dry before you get dressed.

10 WEAR LOOSE DARK CLOTHING - AVOID WEARING A BRA
After tan application be sure to wear loose dark clothing like a maxi dress, robe or black oversized t-shirt. Don't wear a bra for the next few hours while your tan develops.

11 AVOID EXERCISE OR SWIMMING AFTER APPLYING YOUR TAN
Sweat, chlorine and rain don't mix with a freshly applied tan - so don't exercise, swim or go out in the rain while your tan is developing.

12 RINSE OFF TAN AFTER 2 - 4 HOURS - USE BODY CLEANSER
Rinse off your naked tan in the shower 2 - 4 hours after application. Use Naked Tan Goddess Body Cleanser in the shower when rinsing.

I have very pale skin so I sleep in my tan for a deep dark tan. I usually apply my tan in the afternoon or night and wash off first thing in the morning.

13 MAINTAIN TAN DAILY WITH BODY BUTTER
Maintain your tan everyday with a deluxe moisturiser or body creme. I use Goddess Crème de la Crème everyday to hydrate my skin and help me maintain my tan for longer. Hydrating skin will ensure a longer lasting tan.

Goddess Crème de la Crème

14 MAINTAIN TAN WITH BODY WASH - AVOID SOAP!
Avoid using soap in the shower - it will strip your tan! Instead use an SLS free body wash like Naked Tan's Goddess Body Cleanser.  It will keep your tan on longer and won't fade the colour of your tan.

15 TAN LEGS AND FEET WITH SELF TAN
Tan your legs and feet with a gradual tan or self tanner. I apply Goddess Self Tan the day after tanning to my legs. This professional tanning creme is enriched with shea butter and tans while hydrating the skin. I always use Self Tan after shaving my legs.

16 TAN FACE WITH FACE TAN WATER
Everyday before applying my foundation I apply Eco Tan Face Tan Water using a cotton pad to my face. Suitable for oily and acne prone skin and it's non comedogenic.

17 MATCH FOUNDATION WITH YOUR NEW TANNED SKIN
When your skin is tanned - you may need to wear a darker foundation to ensure your face and neck/shoulders are the same colour.

18 HAVE COOL SHOWERS - AVOID LONG HOT SHOWERS
Long hot showers and baths will strip your tan tan quicker, so avoid them! Have cool (or luke warm) short showers instead to ensure a long lasting tan.

Goddess Instant Tan

19 MAINTAIN TAN WITH GODDESS INSTANT TAN
Apply a bronzing creme or liquid bronzer just like Goddess Instant Tan to highlight and enhance your tan. Instant Tan is a 24 hour tan with a natural bronze colour and gorgoeus shimmer.

20 MIX GODDESS INSTANT TAN WITH YOUR FOUNDATION
For a luminous glow mix Instant Tan with your foundation.
Mix Goddess Instant Tan with your regular foundation shade to create a darker shade - this will ensure your foundation matches with your new tanned skin.

HOW TO: Choose Cruelty Free

How To Choose Cruelty Free

So you have made the pledge to go Cruelty-Free - What next? Here's my guide to buying cruelty-free beauty products!

Save the Bunnies!

Refer to online Cruelty Free Lists
This is your best and most reliable resource when it comes to purchasing only cruelty-free beauty products. There are 3 major companies that provide these lists. I refer to Leaping Bunny first as they have the most comprehensive list. I also check the PETA list however this can be a little tricky to find information quickly because of their navigation. But they do have a list of all the companies that do test on animals.
If you're in Australia you will want to also check out Choose Cruelty-Free. This resource is great especially when looking for Australian beauty companies.

Download the Cruelty-Free mobile apps
There are two free apps that I love for cruelty-free beauty shopping on the go! Leaping Bunny's Cruelty-Free app for iphone and android has all the cruelty-free brands right at your finger tips. Choose Cruelty Free also has a mobile app, which comes in handy for finding Australian brands that aren't listed on Leaping Bunny's list like Eco Tan. PETA also has a free app that I have on my iPhone too, although I don't use this one as much as the other two.

Choose Cruelty-Free app                                Leaping Bunny app

Read the Product Label
Many companies will list on the product's labelling/packaging "This product is not tested on animals" or "cruelty-free".  Before purchasing a product read the label and look for the information. If the product has no information about animal testing then don't assume that it's not cruelty-free. Due to different laws in various countries some brands are unable to print on their product packaging that their product is cruelty-free for example Mary Kay was a cruelty-free company for over 40 years but never listed this on their packaging. So check the cruelty-free lists or companies websites for more info.

official PETA logo

Look for the Bunny logo

Companies that appear on Leaping Bunny or PETA's cruelty-free lists get a cruelty-free license which they can use to help their customer's make the choice to purchase their products. Many beauty companies will also have bunny symbols on their products next to words like "cruelty-free". Beauty companies pay an annual fee for the use of the official bunny logos.  Look for these logos on products - it's one of the quickest and easiest ways to find out if a product is cruelty-free. Also some beauty brands will use cute (non-official) symbols of bunnies to catch your attention.... this is ok too but know that the brands that truly care about their customers and meet the strict criteria that Leaping Bunny, PETA and Choose Cruelty Free set are the brands they are allowed to use the official bunny logos.

official Leaping Bunny logo     official Choose Cruelty Free logo

Look for the official Vegan logo
For a product to be classified as "Vegan" it must not be tested on animals and it must not contain any animal or insect bi-products. For example: honey, beeswax, lanolin, milk, carmine, etc. Many cruelty-free lists will also include a criteria that specifies that these "vegan" products must not contain any bi-products or ingredients from the fur industry or slaughter houses.

Visit official animal testing policies
If you can't find a beauty brand listed on one of the cruelty-free lists and the product labelling has no information about animal testing, then you can visit the brands official website and look for the statement regarding their animal testing. You will find their policy usually in the FAQs section, about page or customer service page. Don't be surprised if the beauty brand doesn't list this information or make it easy to find. Companies like Revlon, L'Oreal and Maybelline don't want you to know they test on animals and therefore will not print a statement about their animal testing online.

Email companies to ask if they are Cruelty Free
So you have checked the lists, product packaging and the official website and can't find the cruelty-free info you need about a particular product or brand. Then you can always email the company and ask them directly if their products are cruelty-free.  Here are some examples of questions you might like to ask.
  • Does your company test ingredients or finished products on animals?
  • Do you test ingredients or products on animals through a 3rd party?
  • Do your manufacturers test ingredients or products on animals?
  • Are you owned or affiliated with any companies that test products or ingredients on animals?
  • Do you/your parent company currently or have plans to market and sell your products in the Chinese market, which requires animal testing by law to sell in that country?

ECO TAN: Invisible Tan

ECO TAN Invisible Tan

Introducing ECO TAN... the world's first 100% Natural Certified Organic Tan!

This is by far the best fake tan I've ever used. It's going to be my beauty secret weapon this summer, thats for sure!

Created by Sonya Driver, a single mother, after her sister was diagnosed with melanoma, she knew there needed to be a safe alternative to spray tanning and fake tanning that was natural. After testing many products and discovering that many of these "fake tans" contained lots of toxic chemicals Sonya set about creating a safe, natural, organic tan. The result after many years of formulating she invented Eco Tan. 100% Natural Organic Tan.

Eco Tan ingredients:

  • Avocado Oil
  • Honeysuckle Flower Extract
  • Rosewood Oil
  • Rose Geranium Oil
  • Grapeskin Extract
  • Cacao Fruit (chocolate)
  • Aloe Vera
  • Glycerin
  • Bergamot
  • Chamomile
  • Flower Extract

100% Natural. Certified Organic. Cruelty-Free. Vegan

I purchased the Eco Tan Invisible Tan ($34.95) and is available at ecotan.com.au, at selected health food stores and chemists. Invisible Tan is a deluxe moisturiser that transforms your skin into a gorgeous golden tan.

I have very fair skin that burns very easy, and with the high risk of skin cancer here in Australia sun-baking is just not an option. I have tried so many fake tanners which always promise to take my skin from pale to perfectly tan but never seemed to deliver the golden tan that I desired. That is until I tried Eco Tan's Invisible Tan! All I can say is Wow! This fake tan is not only organic but it really works and gives me a beautiful long-lasting golden tan. The smell is really nice and after about 1 week my tan starts to fade naturally without looking patchy and yuck. I am so impressed with how easy this product is to use. The first day I wore my Invisible Tan,  I decided to wear a white t-shirt just so see how invisible it really was, boy was I surprised! There was no tan residue or stains on my shirt, I couldn't believe it. I would highly recommend Invisible Tan to anyone who wants to get a gorgeous golden tan without the damaging effects of sun tanning!

Kind Beauty Mission

I am an Earth Angel...

After almost 1 year as a vegetarian I am now embarking on a Kind Beauty Mission...

My mission is to transform my total beauty routine into 100% cruelty-free makeup, beauty, hair and personal care products! Choosing only products not tested on animals, cruelty free and vegan.

It's BEAUTIFUL to be Kind...

Since beginning my Eco Glamazine (an eco-friendly digital beauty magazine) 5 months ago I have discovered the truth behind the billion dollar beauty industry and the harsh reality is that some of the leading beauty companies still test their products and ingredients on animals. You may be shocked to learn that Loreal, Maybelline and Covergirl all test on animals! Yes it's true! These precious animals endure brutal cruelty and a life of torture so that these companies can make billions of dollars every year selling you makeup, skincare and beauty products! Well I say that this is unacceptable! We are now in the 21 century and there no excuse and no need to test any products on animals. These animals feel pain and emotion just like we do. If we buy these beauty products from companies knowing that they test on animals aren't we saying that this is ok? Well it's not ok. It's not okay to kill animals just so that I can shampoo my hair! I say NO to Animal Testing! I care about all animals great and small and I refuse to go another day using any products that have been tested on animals!

This is my Earth Angel pledge:
to be kind and live my life everyday with compassion for all animals and our planet! To embrace the natural gifts mother nature has given me and to inspire others to follow their heart and go green.

It's GOOD to be Green...

From this day forward... I am passionate about living an eco-friendly cruelty-free kind life. I am going back to basics.... learning to appreciate the simple things in life... spending time with my puppy, enjoying a hot cup of green tea, relaxing walks along the beach at sunset, eating lots of fresh fruit, watching inspiration videos, recycling more, surrounding myself with positive like-minded people, drinking more water and spending time reading books.

Living the KIND life...

My motto for 2011 was Create Your Dream. I will write a full review of this year later this month (so stay tuned). With the year Twenty Twelve only 2 weeks away, I am looking ahead to the future with a new motto which is The Kind Life. Follow this blog for upcoming kind cruelty-free and vegan beauty reviews! 2012 will be full of changes, new plans, more focus, chasing my dreams, inspiring others, being less materialistic, being true to myself and standing strong.  I invite you to come along for the ride... my kind life
