HOW TO: Choose Cruelty Free

How To Choose Cruelty Free

So you have made the pledge to go Cruelty-Free - What next? Here's my guide to buying cruelty-free beauty products!

Save the Bunnies!

Refer to online Cruelty Free Lists
This is your best and most reliable resource when it comes to purchasing only cruelty-free beauty products. There are 3 major companies that provide these lists. I refer to Leaping Bunny first as they have the most comprehensive list. I also check the PETA list however this can be a little tricky to find information quickly because of their navigation. But they do have a list of all the companies that do test on animals.
If you're in Australia you will want to also check out Choose Cruelty-Free. This resource is great especially when looking for Australian beauty companies.

Download the Cruelty-Free mobile apps
There are two free apps that I love for cruelty-free beauty shopping on the go! Leaping Bunny's Cruelty-Free app for iphone and android has all the cruelty-free brands right at your finger tips. Choose Cruelty Free also has a mobile app, which comes in handy for finding Australian brands that aren't listed on Leaping Bunny's list like Eco Tan. PETA also has a free app that I have on my iPhone too, although I don't use this one as much as the other two.

Choose Cruelty-Free app                                Leaping Bunny app

Read the Product Label
Many companies will list on the product's labelling/packaging "This product is not tested on animals" or "cruelty-free".  Before purchasing a product read the label and look for the information. If the product has no information about animal testing then don't assume that it's not cruelty-free. Due to different laws in various countries some brands are unable to print on their product packaging that their product is cruelty-free for example Mary Kay was a cruelty-free company for over 40 years but never listed this on their packaging. So check the cruelty-free lists or companies websites for more info.

official PETA logo

Look for the Bunny logo

Companies that appear on Leaping Bunny or PETA's cruelty-free lists get a cruelty-free license which they can use to help their customer's make the choice to purchase their products. Many beauty companies will also have bunny symbols on their products next to words like "cruelty-free". Beauty companies pay an annual fee for the use of the official bunny logos.  Look for these logos on products - it's one of the quickest and easiest ways to find out if a product is cruelty-free. Also some beauty brands will use cute (non-official) symbols of bunnies to catch your attention.... this is ok too but know that the brands that truly care about their customers and meet the strict criteria that Leaping Bunny, PETA and Choose Cruelty Free set are the brands they are allowed to use the official bunny logos.

Look for the official Vegan logo
For a product to be classified as "Vegan" it must not be tested on animals and it must not contain any animal or insect bi-products. For example: honey, beeswax, lanolin, milk, carmine, etc. Many cruelty-free lists will also include a criteria that specifies that these "vegan" products must not contain any bi-products or ingredients from the fur industry or slaughter houses.

Visit official animal testing policies
If you can't find a beauty brand listed on one of the cruelty-free lists and the product labelling has no information about animal testing, then you can visit the brands official website and look for the statement regarding their animal testing. You will find their policy usually in the FAQs section, about page or customer service page. Don't be surprised if the beauty brand doesn't list this information or make it easy to find. Companies like Revlon, L'Oreal and Maybelline don't want you to know they test on animals and therefore will not print a statement about their animal testing online.

Email companies to ask if they are Cruelty Free
So you have checked the lists, product packaging and the official website and can't find the cruelty-free info you need about a particular product or brand. Then you can always email the company and ask them directly if their products are cruelty-free.  Here are some examples of questions you might like to ask.
  • Does your company test ingredients or finished products on animals?
  • Do you test ingredients or products on animals through a 3rd party?
  • Do your manufacturers test ingredients or products on animals?
  • Are you owned or affiliated with any companies that test products or ingredients on animals?
  • Do you/your parent company currently or have plans to market and sell your products in the Chinese market, which requires animal testing by law to sell in that country?

ECO TAN: Invisible Tan

ECO TAN Invisible Tan

Introducing ECO TAN... the world's first 100% Natural Certified Organic Tan!

This is by far the best fake tan I've ever used. It's going to be my beauty secret weapon this summer, thats for sure!

Created by Sonya Driver, a single mother, after her sister was diagnosed with melanoma, she knew there needed to be a safe alternative to spray tanning and fake tanning that was natural. After testing many products and discovering that many of these "fake tans" contained lots of toxic chemicals Sonya set about creating a safe, natural, organic tan. The result after many years of formulating she invented Eco Tan. 100% Natural Organic Tan.

Eco Tan ingredients:

  • Avocado Oil
  • Honeysuckle Flower Extract
  • Rosewood Oil
  • Rose Geranium Oil
  • Grapeskin Extract
  • Cacao Fruit (chocolate)
  • Aloe Vera
  • Glycerin
  • Bergamot
  • Chamomile
  • Flower Extract

100% Natural. Certified Organic. Cruelty-Free. Vegan

I purchased the Eco Tan Invisible Tan ($34.95) and is available at ecotan.com.au, at selected health food stores and chemists. Invisible Tan is a deluxe moisturiser that transforms your skin into a gorgeous golden tan.

I have very fair skin that burns very easy, and with the high risk of skin cancer here in Australia sun-baking is just not an option. I have tried so many fake tanners which always promise to take my skin from pale to perfectly tan but never seemed to deliver the golden tan that I desired. That is until I tried Eco Tan's Invisible Tan! All I can say is Wow! This fake tan is not only organic but it really works and gives me a beautiful long-lasting golden tan. The smell is really nice and after about 1 week my tan starts to fade naturally without looking patchy and yuck. I am so impressed with how easy this product is to use. The first day I wore my Invisible Tan,  I decided to wear a white t-shirt just so see how invisible it really was, boy was I surprised! There was no tan residue or stains on my shirt, I couldn't believe it. I would highly recommend Invisible Tan to anyone who wants to get a gorgeous golden tan without the damaging effects of sun tanning!

FAVOURITE PRODUCTS: July Favourites

JULY FAVOURITES

I have found so many new cruelty-free beauty products recently and I wanted to share them with my fellow Beauties... So here are my favourite products I've been loving during June and July... plus they are ALL cruelty-free!

Original Source
Shea Butter and Honey Shower Cream

This cruelty-free (fair trade) shower cream from Original Source smells almost good enough to eat... And thats because its made with delicious honey and skin-loving Shea butter which leaves skin feeling refreshed and hydrated. I love body products with Shea butter and this divine deluxe shower gel is now one of my favourites. Plus its inexpensive and best of all this product is not tested on animals.

David Babaii Bohemian Beach Spray

I love product because its free of nasties like sulfates, parabens, petrochemicals and isnt not tested on animals. You can also recycle the packaging so it's eco-friendly and also good for you hair.

I use this spray on wet hair after I get out of the shower to create beachy, messy curls. It holds the curl, adds texture and doesn't make my hair crunchy. It does have a strong fruity smell which reminds me of summer. This finishing spray is perfect for curly or wavy hair and can be used on wet or dry hair. It's also suitable for use with hot styling tools like curling irons.

St. Ives Apricot Face Wash

I love this product for 2 reasons; firstly it's cruelty-free and secondly it has a fresh refreshing apricot smell that is a really nice change from the usual acne washes that I've tried in the past. This face wash is has microbeads and apricot extracts that deep clean pores to help stop breakouts. It contains Apricot Oil which hydrates and nourishes skin. It contains 2% salicylic acid and it's oil-free so it's perfect for combination to oily skin.

Macadamia Natural Oil

This little bottle maybe small but as they say good things come in small packaging. This healing treatment oil works wonders to nourish and de-tangle my super curly frizzy hair. I love using a few drops as a heat protectant when blow-drying my fringe/bangs. I actually prefer this Macadamia Oil instead of Argon Oil as it has a really nice pleasant smell.

Features:

  • intense nourishment for tangle and frizz free hair
  • hair that is ultra-smooth, manageable and shiny
  • natural UV protection extends the life of color treatments
  • reduced drying time by an amazing 40-50%

Too Faced Lash Injection Mascara

On a recent trip to Kit Cosmetics, I discovered the Lash Injection Mascara and I can honestly say I was not disappointed after trying this mascara. I love the Too faced eyeshadows, so it's no big surprise their mascara is just as amazing. The jumbo mascara wand may seem oversized even for the average beauty user but for those of us blessed with naturally curly lashes it's perfect! The formula doesn't clump, the colour is very black and the formula is waterproof so perfect for hot summer days at the beach.

Features:
  • 3D lash coating technology - forms little tubes around each lash that actually plump and stretch each individual lash, building phenomenal volume and length.
  • Curling Effect - fast-drying elastic polymer provides a "curling" effect, which helps to lift and freezes lashes without a curler.
  • Waterproof - industrial strength formula will withstand weddings, the gym and even sad movies. Lash Injection wont come off until you take it off.
  • Zero smudging, streaking or flaking - long-wearing day or night.

Smash box Soft Lights Shimmer

This is an absolute beauty must have for gorgeously glowing skin! It's the perfect cheek lighter for fair to medium skin. I found this product at Kit Cosmetics a few weeks ago and all I can say is that I'm obsessed! I like to apply this to the tops of my cheek bones using my Eco Tools by Alicia Silverstone Finishing Brush for a soft shimmer glow. It's the perfect nude pink colour for my fair skin and best of all it's cruelty-free.

Smashbox says: "Get a gorgeous lit-from-within glow with this silk-like shimmering powder. The illuminating formula softens the way light reflects on your skin and wakes up your complexion for a radiant look. Using powder brush or a fan brush, sweep across cheekbones, temples and nose, or anywhere else you want a boost of radiance."

NYX Mega Shine Lip Gloss in Salsa

I recently purchased some NYX Mega Shine Lip Glosses from Makeup Geek's online store, and was so surprised when only a few days later they arrived on my door step. The shipping was so quick (and affordable) and which prices so low on the Makeup Geek site, it's actually quicker and cheaper to order these glosses from the states that to attempt to find them here in Australia.

I love the creamy glossy texture of these lip glosses and the colours are amazing too. My favourite new colour is Salsa a shimmer baby pink which goes perfectly over my many pink lipsticks. These lip glosses are so highly pigmented that they can be worn alone or even just with a lip liner for a gorgeous lip colour. NYX doesn't test their products on animals.
